• First-session nerves and gold buttons: arriving in the room
• Names and where they come from: Selena and Vinay
• A recurring dream of being lost on the way to an appointment
• Anxiety she doesn't feel in her body, and the fear of keeping others waiting
• Her father's strictness about time, now carried inside
• The therapist's own ease with being lost
• Becoming the policeman in the dream: authority without confidence
• Biting her lip: noticing anxiety in the here and now
• Mutual reassurance, and being met without being a burden
• Tears, softness and a different experience of an older man
• Hand puppets and mirroring: following, leading and dancing
• Group feedback on the session
Selena opens the day's demonstrations by bringing a recurring dream: she is lost on the way to an appointment, asking for directions from a policeman who does not really know the way. The dream reveals an anxiety she hardly notices in her body: a deep worry about being late and making others wait, rooted in her father's strictness about time and now carried as her own inner judge. Vinay responds first with his own experience, telling her he gets lost easily and is quite at home with it, and invites her to speak as the policeman in her dream. When he notices her biting her lip, the session moves into the present, where they discover a mutual pattern of reassuring each other. Vinay tells her that he can receive her feelings and vulnerability as a bonus rather than a burden, and Selena is moved to tears by being seen and met with softness. The session closes with a playful hand-puppet experiment in which she moves from following to leading, and discovers that she can dance after all.
